Matter is a shared smart home connection standard. The Connectivity Standards Alliance describes it as a way for devices to work across smart home services. That is useful, but a logo on a box is only the beginning of your checks.
Three questions before you buy
- Which app do you want to control the gadget from: Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or another supported system?
- Does this exact model use Matter over Wi-Fi or Matter over Thread?
- What controller, hub or border router does the manufacturer say you need for the features you want?
Keep the exact model number in your notes. A product family name is not enough to identify its connection requirements.
Matter and Thread are different things
Matter describes how compatible smart home devices communicate. Wi-Fi and Thread are networks that can carry that communication. A Thread border router connects a Thread network to your home network; it is not simply another name for any Wi-Fi router.
Google's setup guidance distinguishes hubs for Wi-Fi Matter devices from hubs that also support Thread. Apple's guidance explains which equipment is needed for Thread accessories and remote features. Check the current list for your exact equipment rather than assuming every smart speaker has the same capabilities.
Check the feature, not just the connection
Write down the jobs that matter to you: switching a light, setting a schedule, receiving an alert or controlling something while away. Then look for each job in the maker's instructions for your chosen app. Ask whether it needs the maker's app, an account, an internet connection or a paid plan. Treat an unanswered question as a reason to pause.
For example, a household buying a Thread bulb should identify its existing hub model before adding another box to the basket. A household buying a Wi-Fi device should check the required Wi-Fi band and setup instructions instead. Neither example is a product recommendation.
A useful shopping note
Record the model, supported ecosystem, network type, required hub, account requirement, subscription requirement and security-support end date. Keep the source links next to the answers. Our compatibility checklist helps organise those checks; it does not replace the maker's compatibility statement.
Before committing, also read what security-update promises mean. A compatible device still needs a support plan.
